The Stedi-stock product is essentially a device that allows you to mount your camera and give stability when shooting in slow-speed conditions.

As I photographed the product I became pretty enamored with the simplicity of the device.  It weighs a little more than 6 ounces and bolts on to the camera at the mounting point on the bottom.

I was very much looking forward to actually shooting with this cool little device especially in some of the low light situations that I find myself in.

Basic Stedi-Stock

Things have been pretty busy for the past few days and I had not had a chance to give the Stedi-Stock a real workout until today.  My Wife and son decided to go out on the spur of the moment and hit around some tennis balls  I figured it would be a good opportunity to play a little .
I was not displeased.

At crazy slow speeds for handheld shots I was able to keep the camera pretty solid with the Nikon 70-200 VRII attached and capture some shots that would normally require a tripod to be anywhere near focus.

For instance this shot was done at pretty pedestrian 1/25th of a second.  Slow but not unheard of.  Wait .  This is TENNIS.  1/25 is REALLY slow especially at a focal length of 130MM.

Well lets really go NUTS.  I set up for 1/8th of a sec.  just to see how close I could get.  I would say the results were nothing short of amazing

Here is a 100% crop of her feet and the base line – You can see that it is pretty good for 1/8th of a sec – not perfect but pretty darn good !

All and all I was pretty impressed with this $29 device and can totally endorse it but I do have a couple of issues that bugged me a bit.

After shooting for about 30 minutes my left shoulder was pretty sore.  Harold (the owner and inventor of the Stedi-Stock device) tells me that a pad can be fashioned pretty easily using a buffing pad found at home stores.  I will have to explore this option because after a couple of hours shooting my shoulder would be wrecked.

Second little mod I will need to make is to add a trigger onto the bottom of the Stedi-Stock so that I can maintain a more conventional grip on the camera gear for zooming.

In general for the price this is a total keeper.  I am really looking forward to shooting some video footage with the Stedi-Stock.  I think that for run and gun video this would be an acceptable alternative to using the counter weighted Steadicams.

There is a new version coming out soon that makes the mounting point more adjustable.  And most importantly this device is MADE IN THE USA (actually in the DFW Area ) The owner of the company is a great guy who is a disabled vet and can build anything !  I am proud to lend my voice in support of this great product.

I am going to make a announcement right here and now that will likely follow me in my permanent Google record forever.  I like photographing junk.  (There I said it … now I will likely be listed in Google as a junk photographer and I am going to have to hire a firm to restore my name as a great fine-art photographer.  The things that I do for my art   )  Actually, since I am coming clean on this, I enjoy photographing industrial junk.  Products that have served their intended purpose and now sit as as relics to their prior usefulness have a certain rough beauty to me.  The raw  aesthetic of the repeating lines the,  bright but weather beaten colors above the rust and old grease totally appeals to me as a visual artist.

I found this gem of a yard while doing a bit of exploring around a hidden away industrial area.  The yard was filled with hundreds of lift trucks (fork lifts to you and I) that were being parted out.  Basically, it was a forklift junk yard and to you humble photographer almost photographic heaven.  I was so enthralled by just the possibilities of creating images in this place I actually got a bit gitty.  (yeah sad, I know).  I normally don’t share my scouting videos because I feel a bit dorky when I look at them some time but this one kinda shows how I react to cool junk

I went back to create some images and the lighting was just not on my side for what I had pre-visualized but I was able to create a couple of images that I liked.  Again, my style when I do a study such as this is to call the shot before I actually press the button to create the image do there are a couple of different visual looks playing out in the series.  The set does include a HDR image and black and white process.

I plan to go back as soon as I can when the light cooperates with me.  I have some definite ideas about what I want images from this location to look like.  So look out for more from this series.

And If anybody can get me access to Davis Monthan or  Kingman you would have my total appreciation !
